While it is handy at taking out turrets on capital ships to clear the way for the heavy-hitters, the A-wing is better suited for forging ahead and tearing through enemy starfighters. These modified A-wings were deployed by the Alliance Fleet at the Battle of Endor. By far the fastest and most agile starfighter in the New Republic’s lineup, the A-wing interceptor is built for dogfighting. The resulting modified A-wings used by the rebels were faster than even the TIE/IN Interceptor. Thanks to this track record, the Alliance obtained a number of A-wings and modified them, removing their heavy weapons and shields, in order to make them fast enough to combat the newer generations of Imperial TIE fighters. It was even faster than the TIE Interceptor.ĭuring the Galactic Civil War, A-wings were used by the Alliance in early battles against Imperial forces and soon proved themselves to be capable fighters. It did however lack good shielding and it did have descent armament including concussion missiles and blaster cannons. It was designed to outrun anything and used in hit and run tactics. The R22 A-wing prototype appears in Star Wars Rebels (and was part of the 75150 Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. This blue A-wing depicts the fighter as it was originally envisaged by designer Ralph McQuarrie and portrayed as part of Phoenix Squadron in Rebels (and as it might have appeared in Blue Squadron from Rogue One). The A-wing is Jarek’s all-time favorite Star Wars vehicle, and both in 2008 and now in 2018 he’s built a number of variations of the A-wing. The new version also has foldable landing gear, as this underside photo shows.
Jarek says that his updated A-wing has better proportions than the 2008 version, with properly brick-built missile launchers. The highly-trained Rebel Alliance pilots who fly them.
It’s always interesting to see how builders approach the same subject matter years apart, with improved building skills as well as access to new LEGO pieces. The RZ-1 A-wing Interceptor is one of the fastest and most maneuverable starfighters in the galaxy. It’s been more than 10 years since Jarek shared the first version of his LEGO A-wing, a sleek starfighter first seen in Return of the Jedi.
